THE MONKEY

The Monkey – A Bloody, Hilarious Gorefest That Almost Finds Its Purpose

The Monkey is a riotous, blood-soaked spectacle—packed with so much carnage you’d assume it would alienate audiences who shy away from horror. Yet, surprisingly, this film manages to be accessible to all, thanks to its sharp comedic edge. Think Final Destination, but played for laughs.

It’s not a film you’ll be shouting from the rooftops about, nor one that redefines the genre, but as a pure, entertaining watch, it delivers. Theo James—our top pick for the next Bond—once again proves his versatility, stepping into a role that veers away from his usual fare. Seeing him embrace the absurdity of this film was a joy, and the rest of the cast rise to the occasion with equally fun and committed performances.

Visually, the film is just as engaging. Nicolas Aguilar Ketchum’s cinematography is spot-on, with lighting and stylistic choices that elevate the experience, making the madness all the more enjoyable. The film’s polished aesthetic contrasts beautifully with its chaotic energy, adding an unexpected layer of craftsmanship to the gore-filled ride.

However, something feels missing. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what, but the film’s relentless comedy somewhat undercuts what we suspect was meant to be its original tone. The balance between horror and humor leans a little too far in one direction, making it feel like it loses sight of its core identity.

That said, The Monkey is undeniably fun. It’s an over-the-top, chaotic ride that doesn’t take itself too seriously—perfect for those who enjoy a little laughter with their bloodshed. Just don’t go in expecting a horror masterpiece.
